OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google have recently joined forces to collaborate on AI safety. Chris Lehane, OpenAI's global head of policy, stated that the three companies have been working closely for several weeks to devise a framework that ensures the safety of artificial intelligence. This collaboration comes in the wake of several AI industry leaders expressing concerns about the trajectory and pace of frontier model development. Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, published an essay on his personal blog calling for the AI industry to cooperate in order to slow down the rapid advancement of frontier AI and avoid what he termed "catastrophic risks." Notably, Amodei's call was supported by leaders from major rival companies, including OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman, SpaceXAI's Elon Musk, and Google's Demis Hassabis. Altman even stated that OpenAI is willing to join Anthropic's initiative to embed third-party evaluators within its development teams to monitor AI safety. However, Lehane mentioned during a media briefing that the collaboration among the three companies could risk violating U.S. antitrust laws if perceived as harmful to competition. Amodei suggested that the U.S. government should consider granting these companies a waiver to enable safety cooperation without breaching antitrust laws. Overall, this collaboration highlights the urgency of addressing safety issues in the AI industry and raises broader discussions about competition and regulation.
